Will Suvendu Adhikari be Bengal's Yogi Adityanath? BJP begins bulldozer actions, demolishes meat shop
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar ordered immediate arrests and continuous patrols as post-poll violence left two people dead and several party offices ransacked.
On Tuesday, bulldozers razed multiple structures in Kolkata's historic New Market, triggering panic among traders following the Bharatiya Janata Party's election victory.
The incident occurred one day after the BJP defeated the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC in West Bengal Assembly elections, with the party securing 207 seats to end its 15-year rule.
TMC Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien claimed the bulldozer was brought in to demolish meat shops as a "victory celebration," though local residents disputed this, asserting the structure was illegal.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar directed authorities on Wednesday to immediately arrest those involved in vandalism, emphasizing firm law enforcement as the Commission monitors the situation.
Elsewhere, two people died in separate post-poll incidents, prompting deployment of 50,000 Central Armed Police Forces personnel to maintain order across the state for at least two months.
