Researchers found wildfire smoke reached all 23 monitored homes and pushed overnight PM2.5 above World Health Organization guidelines.
University of Manchester researchers found that wildfire smoke infiltrates homes even when windows are closed, complicating safety guidance during extreme heat and smoke events.
During two periods of wildfire activity in July, the team analyzed 23 homes across Greater Manchester, detecting smoke indoors in all monitored properties, including those up to 60km from fires.
Measurements show average overnight bedroom PM2.5 concentrations rose from 2.7 µg/m³ under normal conditions to 7.8 µg/m³ with windows closed, remaining two to four times higher than usual.
Dr. Thomas Bannan, lead environmental researcher, noted that closing windows reduces smoke exposure but traps heat indoors, creating a difficult choice for households during simultaneous extreme heat and smoke.
Scientists are now investigating practical measures including air filtration and cooling strategies to help residents, especially those with respiratory conditions, during future extreme weather events.
