Rainbow Coalition Not Part of APC, Group Tells Wike
Wike said the governors opposed his Rainbow Coalition and defended his support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
- On Tuesday, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike defended the Rainbow Coalition on Arise Television's Prime Time, arguing the movement mobilizes support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election while the Peoples Democratic Party fields its own candidates.
- The APC Governors Forum, chaired by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, publicly opposed the coalition, fearing the cross-party arrangement could undermine All Progressives Congress candidates and jeopardize the party's standing in the 2027 general elections.
- "They are politically lazy," Wike said, criticizing the governors. He challenged Uzodimma's effectiveness, noting APC won two senatorial seats in Imo State in 2023 while Tinubu secured less than 15 per cent of presidential votes cast there.
- Regarding the coalition's purpose, Wike stated, "Most importantly, the Rainbow Coalition has nothing to do with the APC," emphasizing it mobilizes broad support for the president across political parties.
- Grassroots mobilization, not court declarations, should drive electoral success, the minister argued. After the president's re-election, parties can resume competing for governorship and National Assembly seats in their respective states.
