Hacker Stole Sensitive FEMA and Border Patrol Data in Months-Long Breach
Hackers exploited Citrix vulnerabilities to steal employee data from FEMA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, prompting the dismissal of 24 FEMA IT workers, officials said.
- On June 22, hackers accessed Federal Emergency Management Agency's Citrix virtual desktop infrastructure in a "widespread cybersecurity incident" stealing FEMA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection employee data.
- Agency reviews found failures including lack of multi-factor authentication, use of prohibited legacy protocols, and unpatched vulnerabilities exposing FEMA disaster relief records, DHS said.
- DHS security operations staff were notified on June 22, and by September 10, remediation included changing Zscaler policies and blocking sites; on September 10, FEMA named acting IT officials, Diego Lapiduz led.
- FEMA officials fired by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, including top technology and cybersecurity officers, after resistance and avoiding inspections, DHS said.
