Nate Erskine-Smith Expected to Enter Race as Municipal Election Registration Deadline Nears
He is expected to file nomination papers before Friday’s deadline as 10 candidates vie for the open ward seat, sources said.
Former federal housing minister Nate Erskine-Smith confirmed on Tuesday he is running for the Ward 19 Beaches-East York Toronto city council seat after Mayor Olivia Chow and others encouraged him to continue public service.
Following his resignation from federal politics last month, the former Beaches-East York MP shifted to municipal government after serving as housing minister under Justin Trudeau and Prime Minister Mark Carney, then facing failed provincial nomination bids in Scarborough Southwest.
Ten candidates are vying for the open seat, including CTV News journalist Natalie Johnson, who criticized the entry by labeling his campaign a 'backup plan' after his ambitions in Ottawa and Queen's Park were derailed.
Erskine-Smith rejected the characterization, stating, 'Representing Beaches-East York at city council is my first choice, not a last resort,' while outlining plans to focus on housing solutions, defending Toronto's waterfront, and enhancing city services.
With incumbent Brad Bradford campaigning for mayor, the seat remains open as Torontonians head to the polls on Oct. 26 to decide the future of the east-end constituency in this year's municipal election.
