- On Tuesday, World Health Organization official Luca Fontana said staff shortages and funding gaps are hindering the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of Congo as the outbreak intensifies.
- The Bundibugyo strain epidemic has spread across six provinces, causing 3,175 deaths among more than 6,600 confirmed cases since May 15, according to the WHO.
- While nearly 1,400 beds are established across 59 treatment centres, Fontana said officials estimate "another 1,600 beds will be required" to manage the surge.
- To reach the planned 3,000-bed capacity, the WHO requires 9,000 total staff, necessitating recruitment of roughly 5,000 additional workers to supplement the nearly 4,000 currently employed.
- With patients arriving from villages "far beyond" the Bunia epicentre, Fontana stressed that the response "must adapt" as the health ministry in Kinshasa struggles to identify sufficient medical personnel.
