Who is Japan's goalie? Meet Zion Suzuki, who was born in USA to parents from different countries
The 23-year-old goalkeeper has more than two dozen caps for Japan and is expected to start throughout the tournament.
Zion Suzuki, a USA-born goalkeeper, has solidified his status as Japan's primary option for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He is expected to start for the 'Samurai Blue' throughout the entire tournament.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Suzuki moved to Japan as an infant and developed through the Urawa Red Diamonds academy. He became the club's youngest professional signing at 16 years and five months old.
Since his U-15 level debut, Suzuki has consistently represented Japan, choosing the 'Samurai Blue' over the USMNT. He made his senior debut in 2022 and has earned more than two dozen caps.
After making 32 appearances in Belgium's Jupiler Pro League, Suzuki now plays for Italian Serie A side Parma. His transition to the Italian top flight in 2024 marked a major step in his career.
Japan drew the Netherlands 2-2 in Arlington, Texas, and now prepares for their next match against Tunisia on Saturday in Monterrey, Mexico. This tournament positioning underscores Suzuki's importance to the team's World Cup campaign.
