See It: Shark Spotted Hunting Seal Just Offshore in Dramatic Nantucket Encounter
Witnesses said the shark was 12 to 14 feet long and fed on a seal just feet from shore, leaving bloody water behind.
On Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, a great white shark was filmed feeding on a seal off Nantucket's Great Point Beach, with witnesses Carrie Drayton and Tyler O'Brien capturing the moment during a local fishing competition.
Gregory Skomal, a senior fisheries scientist with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, confirmed Monday the animal was a white shark and noted such feeding behavior is common as sharks migrate seasonally through Nantucket waters.
Drayton and O'Brien estimated the shark was between 12 and 14 feet long, with Drayton describing the close encounter as "truly wild" and noting she could have reached out to touch it.
The Atlantic Shark Institute shared the footage on Facebook, describing the predation as a "once in a lifetime" event, though experts noted such scenes repeat continually along the New England coast and into Canada.
Coastal development can reduce vital shark habitats, pushing predators to hunt closer to shore where they become more visible and increase human interactions, prompting experts to advise ocean swimmers to remain near the beach.
A quiet beach in the United States was rocked when a ferocious shark tore apart a seal in seconds. A woman passing by captured the scene on video. It is now going viral on social media.
