White House says Trump administration official assaulted at UN General Assembly

A Health and Human Services official was followed, recorded, and assaulted for about 10 minutes at the UN; the suspect was charged and released pending court, officials said.

  • On September 25, an unnamed HHS international-relations official was followed into a bathroom and physically assaulted inside United Nations Headquarters during the UN General Assembly, but escaped safely and the attacker was arrested.
  • Following a week of disruptions, President Donald Trump said his UN appearance suffered triple sabotage, citing escalator, teleprompter and sound problems during UN General Assembly week.
  • Witnesses describe that the assailant trailed the official down a hallway, shoved her, and tried to force entry into a women’s bathroom stall at UN Headquarters while filming and shining a bright light, during the 10-minute ordeal.
  • Police identified the suspect as Patricia Schuh, charged with assault and weapon possession; she was released at 7:30 p.m. Friday and must appear in court on Nov. 13, while the U.S. Secret Service investigates.
  • The U.S. UN spokesperson called the assault unacceptable and said the United Nations will support the U.S. Secret Service and conduct a thorough security review amid national-security concerns.
