University of Glasgow Plans Whisky Aging Experiment in Orbit in 2028
Scientists will track colour and chemistry in tiny samples as the Space Puffin cubesat tests whether whisky matures faster in microgravity.
- Engineers from Scotland and Japan are planning to launch the "Space Puffin" cubesat in 2028, sending whisky samples on a five-year mission to orbit Earth via the International Space Station's Japanese module.
- Dr Gilles Bailet of the University of Glasgow said the experiment tests whisky "breathing" as it ages, with the cubesat rotating Earth every 90 minutes through temperatures varying between minus 150 degrees to 200 degrees.
- Liquid samples will be contained by small wood chips to mimic Earth aging, as the cubesat will not carry a full cask. Scientists will monitor the whisky in space, feeding chemical composition data back to the University.
- Dr Bailet expects this process to produce "really bold whiskies" with "extremely complex flavour profiles." He noted it is "in the realm of possible" to bring back a litre of aged spirit within three to five years.
- The research aims to provide insight into orbital factories, which could help produce molecules for medications difficult to make on Earth. Geoff Nisbet of Allen Associates said the project brings together the whisky industry, engineering innovation, and the next generation of engineers.
