While most people wait for sweater weather, some states are already elbow deep in apples
Apple season has started early in the Pacific Northwest, Michigan, and Southeast mountain regions, weeks before most places begin in September.
Orchards in these regions typically begin picking by mid-August, earlier than the usual late September or early October season.
Washington's Wenatchee and Yakima corridor is the earliest area to start apple harvesting in the Pacific Northwest.
The apple season extends into early November, with later varieties ripening in the Mid-Atlantic and Appalachian highlands, which are the last regions to begin picking.
