What if Trump Actually Seized Kharg Island?
Experts say seizing the oil hub would require at least 1,200 troops and constant air defense to hold it against Iranian attacks.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump stated in a social media post that the U.S. intends to take Kharg Island, Iran's oil infrastructure hub, to assume control of its energy markets.
Processing about 90% of Iran's crude oil exports and sitting roughly 15 miles off the coast, Kharg Island serves as a critical economic asset for Tehran.
Between 1,200 and 4,000 U.S. troops would be required to seize the island, according to retired Army Gen. Joseph Votel, who led Central Command from 2016 to 2019.
Caitlin Talmadge, a military strategy instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, warned that occupying the island would expose U.S. personnel to missile and drone attacks, complicating resupply efforts.
Expanding the conflict rather than delivering a decisive victory is the likely outcome of occupying the island, according to Ryan Brobst and Cameron McMillan of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.
Trump's comments on the takeover of Iran's island of Kharg rekindle the debate with warnings of threats to troops, disruptions to the oil market and an expansion of the conflict.
