The Met Gala Dress Code for 2026 Is "Fashion Is Art." What Does that Mean?
Vogue says the 2026 theme will ask guests to treat clothing as art, with the Costume Institute exhibition exploring fashion and the human form.
On Monday, May 4, 2026, guests ascended the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual Met Gala, adorned in outfits tailored to the dress code "Fashion is Art."
The gala celebrates the Costume Institute's spring exhibition, "Costume Art," opening May 10, designed by Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton to "illuminate the indivisible connection between clothing and the body."
Celebrity stylist Julie Matos predicts attendees will wear "sculptural construction pieces" and gowns referencing art history, while the exhibit includes garments and artworks spanning roughly 5,000 years.
Co-Chairs Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour led the event, while the gala host committee included Anthony Vaccarello and Zoe Kravitz; Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos served as honorary chairs.
This exhibition marks the first to be housed in the Costume Institute's new 12,000-square-foot permanent galleries at The Met, remaining open to the public through January 10, 2027.
