- On Friday, Alphabet-owned Waymo announced plans to launch its autonomous, all-electric robotaxi service in Singapore by 2028, marking the company's first expansion into Southeast Asia.
- The expansion follows Waymo's establishment of a local corporate entity earlier this year and builds on partnerships with Singapore's Ministry of Transport and Land Transport Authority .
- Initial fleets of all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles will arrive in the coming months, with trained specialists conducting manual driving throughout 2027 to adapt the "Waymo Driver" technology to local road geometry and monsoon weather.
- Before accepting passengers, Waymo must secure approval from the LTA and pass safety assessments at the Centre of Excellence for Testing and Research to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana noted the move mirrors the company's global strategy, which includes planned launches in London by the end of 2026, Tokyo in 2027, and Munich in late 2027.
