Waymo to Bring Autonomous Ride-Hailing to Las Vegas
The Alphabet-owned company is inviting riders on a rolling basis as it starts with dozens of Ojai minivans and plans to expand its fleet.
- On Monday, Alphabet-owned Waymo launched invite-only robotaxi services in Las Vegas, marking its 15th market and first entry into Nevada with dozens of Ojai minivan robotaxis serving the Strip and Boulder Junction.
- Following approval by the Nevada Transportation Authority, Waymo enters a competitive market where Tesla, Zoox, and Motional also plan commercial services, following the robotaxi launch playbook used in 14 other cities.
- For now, riders must request an invite to receive an access code, while Waymo will scale the service over time using its sixth-generation self-driving system built on the Zeekr vehicle platform.
- Regulators authorized up to 1,000 autonomous vehicles for Waymo over the next 12 months, supported by a $16 billion raise in February as the company competes against Uber and Amazon's Zoox.
- Earlier this month, Waymo announced expansion plans for Denver, San Diego, and Tampa, while Tesla's Cybercab engineer Eric Early noted the city could be saturated with up to 2,500 robotaxis next year.
