Browns HC Todd Monken Speaks Out About Naming Starting QB Before Training Camp Amid Deshaun Watson Buzz
Todd Monken said he wants a starter before training camp but is not ready after three days of on-field work.
On Friday, Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken told 92.3 The Fan he is not ready to name a starting quarterback, leaving the competition between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders open.
Watson and Sanders are currently battling for the role, with reports indicating the veteran Watson holds a slight edge due to experience following minicamp, while Sanders represents potential but remains unproven.
Evaluating players during three practices this spring, Monken said, "I'm not there yet, so I can't say that," emphasizing he needs more on-field observation before deciding.
Competition for the job remains fluid; Monken stated that rep distribution—even if one player receives two-thirds—will not dictate the final decision until preseason games provide more data.
The Browns also have quarterbacks Taylen Green and Dillon Gabriel on the roster, with staff planning to utilize upcoming spring sessions and training camp to determine the Week 1 starter.
