Australia’s Most Powerful Battery Storage System Officially Completed
The 850 MW system can power up to 340,000 homes and is designed to stabilize the grid as coal plants retire.
- The Waratah Super Battery is now fully operational, adding 850MW of dispatchable power and 1,680MWh of storage capacity to the NSW electricity grid.
- A "catastrophic failure" of High Voltage Transformer 3 in October 2025 had restricted operations to 350MW until Akaysha Energy replaced the component and restored full capacity.
- Acting as a shock absorber for the network, the system can power up to 340,000 NSW households at peak demand while monitoring 36 transmission lines in real time.
- Akaysha CEO Nick Carter called the final commercial operations a "landmark moment," with the project attracting more than AU$1 billion in private investment and involving around 1,000 people.
- EnergyCo CEO Hannah McCaughey called the battery a "world-leading piece of energy infrastructure" that ensures reliable power as aging coal-fired power stations retire across NSW.
