Ukrainian Drones Struck a Russian Oil Platform in the Caspian Sea for the Third Time in a Matter of Days, Security Source Says
Ukrainian drones have struck Russian oil platforms three times in less than a week, halting production and targeting key energy infrastructure to cut Moscow’s war funding, SBU said.
- On December 15, long-range SBU drones struck the Korchagin oil and gas condensate field in the Caspian Sea, damaging equipment and halting production in the third attack this week.
- Kyiv has ramped up a deep-strike campaign targeting oil and gas facilities and expanded operations into the Caspian Sea in recent weeks, the SBU said these aim to cut Russia's energy sector revenues and weaken its war funding.
- Last Thursday, drones struck the Filanovsky oil production platform and again the next day before hitting the Korchagin oil and gas condensate field, both operated by Lukoil-Nizhnevolzhskneft.
- Observers say the attacks mark a new chapter as Ukraine expands strikes on Russia's energy sector, and Lukoil did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
- In recent weeks, Kyiv has expanded naval drone attacks on three tankers allegedly belonging to the Russian `shadow fleet`, while the European Union moves to speed sanctions; the Filanovsky field holds about 129 million tons of oil and 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
