Semiconductor Firm VSMC Opens First S$8.5 Billion Plant in Singapore, Expected to Create 1,600 Jobs
The plant will make specialty chips for automotive, industrial and consumer markets, and is expected to create about 1,600 jobs.
On Monday, September 28, 2026, VisionPower Semiconductor Manufacturing Company —a joint venture between Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation and NXP Semiconductors N.V. —opened its S$8.5 billion wafer fab in Tampines, Singapore.
VSMC is targeting rising demand for chips that power 'physical artificial intelligence,' which moves AI into vehicles, robots, and infrastructure, while strengthening global supply chain resilience amid growing electrification and automation trends.
Initial sample lots achieved yields above 99 per cent, with VSMC set to produce approximately 44,000 12-inch wafers monthly by 2029 using 130- to 40-nanometre process technologies.
Minister for Trade and Industry Tan See Leng noted VSMC will create 1,600 jobs, with 75 per cent designated for professional, managerial, and technical roles supported by local university partnerships.
Volume production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027, as VSMC management considers a second plant to meet growing global demand for specialty semiconductors.
