Virginia Tech athletics director Whit Babcock to retire from role
Babcock cited family, health and work-life balance after Virginia Tech secured $229 million in new athletics funding and hired James Franklin.
On Thursday, Virginia Tech Athletics Director Whit Babcock announced his retirement after 12 years, effective June 30, 2026. Beginning July 1, he will transition to an Athletics Director Emeritus role, advising the university president and his successor.
During his 12-year tenure, Babcock oversaw significant financial growth, increasing the department's budget from $85 million to $200 million while securing $229 million in additional funding. The Hokies captured 30 of their 46 Atlantic Coast Conference championships.
Head football coach James Franklin emphasized the need for alignment, stating, "There has to be alignment in everything." He cited upcoming leadership decisions as critical for sustaining the program's momentum.
University President Tim Sands, who is also stepping down, credited Babcock with elevating the department "competitively, academically and culturally." This move follows athletic director changes across eight of the ACC's 18 teams over the past 18 months.
Babcock stated, "I know that now is the right time to retire as AD" to focus on family and health. He leaves confident the foundation is strong, noting, "The foundation is strong and the future is bright.
