Virginia Sen. L. Louise Lucas has been vocal advocate for marijuana legalization
Federal agents searched the store as Lucas, a longtime marijuana legalization advocate, said drug laws unfairly target Black residents.
On Wednesday, the FBI searched Virginia Sen. Louise Lucas' office and her Portsmouth business, The Cannabis Outlet, with The Washington Post reporting the raid is part of an ongoing corruption investigation.
Lucas, the state senate's president pro tempore and a longtime Democrat, is known for her outspoken style and cannabis advocacy, having sponsored Senate Bill 1406 in 2021 to legalize marijuana.
After sponsoring Senate Bill 1406, Lucas opened The Cannabis Outlet in 2021 to sell hemp and CBD products, justifying her advocacy by noting Black Americans are arrested for marijuana possession at four times the rate of White Americans.
The senator has frequently used social media to address critics, once writing on X in 2022, "Let's talk about pot," after opening her shop; her vivacious dancing at political events has also frequently gone viral.
While federal law enforcement has not specified what they were seeking, the investigation has drawn scrutiny to Lucas and her 34-year career in politics; she previously faced and defeated felony charges related to a protest of a Confederate monument.
