‘A Different Deal on the Table’: AG Asks SCC to Reset the Clock on Dominion-NextEra Merger
Jones says the new commitments amount to an amendment, and a reset could give regulators and intervenors more time to review the $67 billion deal.
- Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones told state regulators Friday that they should reset the 180-day review period for the $67 billion Dominion Energy-NextEra Energy merger after the companies unveiled expanded conditions.
- Dominion Energy and NextEra filed supplemental documents on September 14, outlining expanded project promises including extending residential bill credits to four years, creating 1,000 jobs, and maintaining Virginia employee levels for five years.
- Jones filed testimony arguing the changes miscast an amendment of pleadings as simple supplemental testimony, stating the current schedule does not give intervenors adequate time to analyze the new commitments.
- If the State Corporation Commission agrees, the evidentiary hearing would move from November 17, 2026, to approximately January 19, 2027, extending the review into the next General Assembly session.
- Simultaneously, the State Corporation Commission hears arguments on Tuesday on a separate motion to compel filed by Clean Virginia. Clean Virginia President Brennan Gilmore said the group cannot rely on company assurances: "We need facts, and we can't take them at their word that everything is going to be okay if this merger goes forward.
