Santa Ana Police Say Use-of-Force Incident Being Reviewed After Video Shows Officers Punching Detained Man
Police Chief Robert Rodriguez said the department is reviewing body-camera footage and reports as officials face calls for transparency over the arrest.
- On Thursday, Oct. 1, Santa Ana Police arrested Florentino Lopez after a bystander filmed officers restraining and punching him against a patrol vehicle. The viral footage prompted public outcry and an internal department review.
- Near Jackson Street and 5th Street, Lopez and officers were "jawing back and forth" before the arrest turned violent, with a bystander recording officers holding and punching Lopez multiple times.
- Attorney John Kremer stated Lopez pleaded not guilty Monday to resisting arrest and intends to post $20,000 bail. Kremer alleged Lopez was "smoking a joint on his own property, which is OK, an infraction at most."
- Police Chief Robert Rodriguez confirmed he personally reviewed the video and incident reports. Mayor Valerie Amezcua stated she immediately contacted the city manager and chief, emphasizing support for a thorough investigation.
- Following last year's intense criticism of police conduct, including the 2024 killing of Noe Rodriguez, local candidates Dwayne Shipp and Dan Shimell demanded accountability, noting officers are not above the law.
