RCMP: Violent Crime Trending Downward in Nanaimo

Property crime stayed the most common category as Nanaimo logged 475 more criminal-code offences and a 25% jump in disturbance calls.

  • On Monday, May 4, Superintendent Eric Rochette reported that violent crime in Nanaimo decreased by 2 per cent in 2025, though total criminal-code offences rose 4 per cent with 475 more files than 2024.
  • Violent crime accounted for 21.7 per cent of all criminal-code offences in 2025, bringing Nanaimo's violent-crime average 3.6 per cent lower than the national average and nearly at par with provincial levels.
  • Mental-Health related calls surged 20 per cent with 448 more files, and causing-a-disturbance files increased 25 per cent with 436 more files, while most property crimes including break-and-enters and shoplifting declined.
  • Coun Ian Thorpe questioned the link between 163 additional mental-health calls and 140 causing-a-disturbance offences in the downtown district; Rochette confirmed a frequent though not constant connection between the two.
  • Addressing community concerns from Sheryl Armstrong regarding prolific offenders, Nanaimo RCMP and Crown officials stated they will request custody for arrested offenders, though court discretion ultimately determines remand outcomes.
