Video. Protesters in Madrid have spent a second night camping in Puerta del Sol, turning the capital’s main square into a makeshift housing protest camp after the eviction of 87-year-old María del Carmen Abascal, widely known as “Maricarmen”.
The spontaneous camping called by the Sindicato de Inquilinas has gained strength on its first day standing with profiles of all ages that refuse to disassemble their tents until “measures are taken to stop cities from being a zoo”
The Sindicato de Inquilinas e Inquilinos de Madrid raises tents in the central Puerta del Sol as a measure of pressure against the central government to approve the "Decreto Mari Carmen", which seeks to establish indefinite rental contracts, freeze rent prices and impose a moratorium on evictions. The protest broke out after the eviction of an octogenarian, which has become a symbol of the housing crisis in Spain.
