‘I Don’t Think We’d Be Here without Him’: Trooper, Siblings Recount Dramatic Rescue on Kentucky Interstate
Trooper Blaine Miller broke through the windshield and pulled all four siblings to safety before the SUV was fully engulfed, Kentucky State Police said.
On Friday, Kentucky State Trooper Blaine Miller rescued four siblings from a burning SUV after a rollover crash on I-65 in Hardin County. Miller breached the vehicle's windshield, extracting all occupants as the car caught fire.
A tractor-trailer driven by Steven Hawkins merged into the right lane of I-65 near the 87-mile marker Friday afternoon, forcing the Honda CRV off the shoulder and causing it to overturn multiple times.
Miller, responding to an unrelated incident nearby, observed heavy smoke and knew 'time was critical.' He instructed the passengers to close their eyes before breaking the windshield to remove all four Louisville residents from the smoking vehicle.
All four occupants—Samantha Bloom, Joshua Bloom, Sarah Bloom, and Savannah Bloom—sustained minor injuries and were transported to Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown, where they were treated and released.
Reflecting on the rescue, Samantha Bloom said, 'I don't think we'd be here without him.' Miller stated, 'Recognition is not expected at all in this job,' emphasizing his duty-driven approach.
