Victoria Royals land WHL star Cameron Schmidt in blockbuster draft-day trade
Schmidt scored 51 goals and 100 points this season, and Victoria also added future draft picks in separate deals.
On Wednesday, The Victoria Royals acquired 19-year-old forward Cameron Schmidt from the Seattle Thunderbirds, sending the seventh overall pick in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft and a 2028 fourth-round pick to Seattle.
After narrowly missing the playoffs in 2025-26, Royals general manager Jake Heisinger decided to move high draft picks for proven talent. "We felt it was time to take a stab at it," Heisinger said.
Schmidt, a Dallas Stars prospect, recorded 51 goals and 49 assists in 72 games, becoming the only player in the WHL to score more than 50 goals while tallying 28 points in 24 career games against Victoria.
The Royals also sent fifth and ninth-round 2026 selections to the Portland Winterhawks for a seventh-round pick and a 2028 fourth-round selection, with Heisinger indicating the club may not be done dealing.
Victoria expects to return much of its roster for 2026-27, excluding graduating 20-year-olds, while Timofei Runtso is committed to Miami University in Ohio and is expected to be the sole eligible Royal not to return.
