Vernon gardening club celebrates 100 years of growing community
The centennial show drew about 100 entries as members promoted drought-wise gardening and planned bouquets for Vernon homes older than 100 years.
At the Schubert Centre Saturday, the Vernon District Garden Club celebrated its 100th anniversary with a flower show featuring roughly 100 entries of various plants and flowers.
Founded 100 years ago, the District Garden Club has spent a century fostering community and friendship through gardening. Past club president Janet Stoll joined in the late 70s and credits the club with helping her build connections.
Greater Vernon is currently under historic Stage 3 water restrictions amid severe drought conditions. The mayor recently called the situation a "crisis" and advocated for stricter Stage 4 measures.
Past Garden Club president Elisabeth Reymond hand-watered her flower show entries under recently revised Stage 3 rules. Stoll recommended drip irrigation as "the way forward" and suggested drought-resistant species like irises and succulents.
The club plans to honor historic Vernon homes aged 100 years or older by delivering plants or bouquets to each property. This initiative aims to sustain the surge in community gardening interest observed in recent years.
