Vermont prosecutor declines to charge six protesters arrested at South Burlington ICE raid
George said the six protesters had no criminal records and should not bear the burden of harm from the ICE operation, which drew more than 50 videos.
On Wednesday, Chittenden County State's Attorney Sarah George announced she will not charge six protesters arrested during the March 11 Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid in South Burlington, citing their lack of criminal records.
The March 11 ICE operation at a South Burlington home triggered by a case of mistaken identity resulted in six arrests after police clashed with protesters, citing disorderly conduct and assault.
Three cases were referred to the Burlington Community Justice Center for restorative processing, while George reviews over 60 hours of body-camera footage and calls for an independent investigation into law enforcement conduct.
Vermont Public Safety Commissioner Jennifer Morrison condemned the decision as a "disheartening" precedent, warning that declining to prosecute could embolden criminal behavior and place public and law enforcement at greater risk.
Amid 25 internal complaints regarding the March 11 incident, the Burlington Police Commission will meet on Monday to discuss the decision, which occurs ahead of George's 2026 reelection bid.
