Kamilla Rakhimova Beats Venus Williams 6-4, 6-1 in a Rain-Delayed Match in Toronto
Kamilla Rakhimova won 6-4, 6-1 in 1 hour 27 minutes as rain delayed the start and Venus Williams fell to 12 straight losses.
On Sunday, Kamilla Rakhimova defeated Venus Williams 6-4, 6-1 to open the National Bank Open women's main draw at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, following a weather delay that pushed the scheduled start into the afternoon.
The 46-year-old icon, making her 13th appearance in Canada, has now lost 12 straight matches dating back to July 2025 after bowing out late following a hard-fought start.
"Playing Venus is not an everyday experience," Rakhimova said after the 24-year-old from Uzbekistan fought off a break point in the first set and coasted to victory in one hour 27 minutes.
"I was just fighting to put the ball on the court," Williams added regarding the weather conditions, while noting the crowd support was "fantastic" during the rain-delayed match.
Elsewhere at the tournament, Toronto's Katherine Sebov topped Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito 6-3, 6-4, while Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Richmond Hill's Ariana Arsenault.
