Venice adds Gaza documentary by Oscar-winning team to main competition

The documentary from the No Other Land directors was produced by The Guardian and James Wilson and will screen with the filmmakers present.

  • On Monday, the Venice Film Festival added documentary 'NAZA' to its official competition at the 83rd edition, making it the only feature documentary among 21 films competing for the Golden Lion at the Sept. 10 premiere.
  • Directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, who won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature with 'No Other Land,' are returning with a new documentary about the war in Gaza about a year and a half after their Oscar victory.
  • The film's title 'NAZA' derives from a Hebrew military acronym for 'collateral damage'; shot at night on Tel Aviv rooftops, it is based on Abraham's investigations published between 2023 and 2025 in Local Call, +972 magazine and The Guardian.
  • Executive producer Jonathan Glazer, Oscar-winning director of 'The Zone of Interest,' joins producer James Wilson on the project, with the film screening Sept. 10 at 5:15 p.m. in the Sala Grande alongside the directors and Guardian journalists.
  • Last year, 'The Voice of Hind Rajab' won second prize at Venice with a record 23-minute standing ovation, marking the second consecutive year a Gaza-focused documentary has competed for the Golden Lion after international protests on the Lido.
