Vaxcyte (NASDAQ:PCVX) Reaches New 52-Week High - Here's Why
The vaccine met all primary endpoints and matched or beat Pfizer and Merck comparators, sending Vaxcyte shares up 56.91% in premarket trading.
On Monday, Vaxcyte shares climbed about 50%, catapulting the company's market value past $12 billion after its experimental VAX-31 vaccine achieved all primary endpoints in the Phase 3 OPUS-1 clinical trial.
Designed to protect against 31 bacterial strains, VAX-31 enters an $8 billion annual market, directly competing with Pfizer's Prevnar 20 and Merck's Capvaxive for dominance in adult pneumococcal vaccination.
Researchers confirmed VAX-31 produced immune responses comparable to existing vaccines while proving superior against three unique strains; the vaccine was 'well tolerated' with adverse reactions resolving within 48 hours.
Leerink Partners analyst David Risinger called the results 'highly impressive,' though VAX-31 missed stricter benchmarks on two strains against Capvaxive, while Mizuho Securities analyst Salim Syed termed the findings a 'near best-case scenario.'
Vaxcyte expects results from OPUS-2 and OPUS-3 trials in the first half of 2027, with plans to submit a U.S. marketing application to the Food and Drug Administration in the first half of 2028.
