Declan Rice Criticises Decision to Overturn ‘Clear Penalty’ in Arsenal Draw
Rice said the referee reversed Arsenal’s penalty after 13 reviews as UEFA considers whether his comments breached match-official rules.
On Wednesday, Arsenal drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final after referee Danny Makkelie overturned a late penalty decision for Eberechi Eze following a VAR review.
Makkelie reviewed the incident 13 times against the backdrop of 70,000 whistling Atletico fans at Estadio Metropolitano before reversing his on-pitch verdict, drawing sharp criticism from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice insisted the penalty was "clear" and claimed fans "provoked" the referee to change his mind, noting that European competitions penalize teams more harshly than the Premier League.
UEFA is reviewing Rice's remarks to determine if he questioned the integrity of match officials, leaving the midfielder at risk of potential sanction for his public statements about fan influence.
Next Tuesday, Arsenal will host the second leg at Emirates Stadium, where forward Bukayo Saka challenged supporters to "go above and beyond" to help the club reach the final in Budapest.
