Universities of Wisconsin leaders looking to oust system president who refuses to quit
Rothman says regents gave him no reason to leave as the 165,000-student system faces leadership uncertainty and a pending Madison campus chancellor search.
- On Thursday, Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman revealed the Board of Regents told him to resign or face termination, though he refuses to step aside from the 165,000-student system.
- Rothman, who has led the 25-campus system since 2022, faced a tenure marked by efforts to increase state funding, free speech debates amid pro-Palestinian protests, and declining enrollment leading to eight branch campus closures.
- In a letter dated March 26, Rothman wrote he was surprised when told "an unidentified majority of the Board of Regents had lost confidence" in his leadership, stating "You did not provide any tangible reasons for the Board's determination."
- The Board held a closed emergency meeting Wednesday night to discuss personnel matters, with Board President Amy Bogost stating the Board is responsible for the leadership of the Universities and is having discussions about its future.
- Amid this leadership uncertainty, the university must replace the chancellor of the flagship Madison campus this year, as Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin is departing to become president of Columbia University.
