USA Edges Dominican Republic, Aided by Blown Call, to Reach WBC Finale
Team USA won 2-1 over the Dominican Republic in a pitchers' duel highlighted by three solo home runs and a disputed final strike call that ended the game.
At loanDepot Park, Team USA defeated the Dominican Republic 2-1 in a semifinal Sunday night, advancing to the March 17 final.
After advancing through pool play, Team USA faced a win-or-go-home semifinal after beating Canada in the quarterfinal, while the Dominican Republic team entered as the tournament’s offensive powerhouse.
In a pitchers' duel, Paul Skenes and Luis Severino allowed one run each over 4 1/3 and 3 1/3 innings, with all three runs on solo homers, including Roman Anthony's 421-foot blast.
The controversial call ended the game as Mason Miller struck out Geraldo Perdomo on a called third strike; Hawk-Eye showed the pitch below the zone, sending Team USA to its third straight WBC final.
With the final set for Tuesday, Team USA is one win from a world championship, facing Italy or Venezuela at 8 p.m. with Nolan McClean starting and Fox broadcasting.
