State Department Lowers Travel Warning for Country Recently Attacked by US
The advisory drop reflects eased risks but maintains warnings for multiple no-travel zones, with routine consular services in Venezuela still suspended, the State Department said.
- On Thursday, the U.S. State Department reduced its Venezuela advisory from Level 4 Do Not Travel to Level 3 Reconsider Travel, warning of crime, kidnapping, terrorism and poor health infrastructure.
- The change followed a U.S. military operation in Venezuela and removed the 'Wrongful Detention,' 'Unrest' and 'Other' indicators less than three months after U.S. special forces captured President Nicolás Maduro.
- Several regions are singled out as do-not-travel zones, including the Venezuela–Colombia border region , Amazonas, Apure, Aragua outside Maracay, Guárico, Táchira, and rural Bolívar, while embassy operations have resumed since 2019.
- Routine consular limitations mean routine consular services remain suspended in Venezuela and the U.S. government is extremely limited in assisting citizens, especially outside Caracas, while a Venezuelan visa is required before travel.
- For those who travel despite risks, the advisory recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, consulting company security departments, hiring professional security organizations, and developing communication and proof-of-life plans.
