US wants Netanyahu to condemn settler siege in Palestinian village, officials say
White House officials say the siege has trapped 15 Palestinians without water or electricity and could complicate Netanyahu’s election politics.
On Friday, The United States pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly condemn a settler siege in Qusra after learning a Palestinian-American's home was among those trapped.
Settlers have besieged three homes for six days, trapping 15 Palestinians without water or electricity; rights groups allege this is a strategy to seize land and connect outposts.
"We are very afraid," said Aysha Hassan, who remains trapped inside her home, while U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee condemned the settlers on Thursday as "Israeli terrorists."
The Israeli military deployed soldiers to Qusra on Thursday to maintain security, removing a settler tent and initiating disciplinary action against personnel involved in the siege.
Condemning settlers could be politically risky for Netanyahu two months before an election, as opinion polls show he could lose power with his security credentials shaken since the 2023 Hamas attacks.
