- On Thursday, the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned two sons of Nicaraguan copresidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, including Maurice Facundo Ortega Murillo, presidential delegate for sports, and Daniel Edmundo Ortega Murillo, head of the Communication and Citizenship Council.
- Sanctions stem from the 2025 forcible seizure of BHMB Mining Nicaragua, a company with foreign investment, as Treasury said the sanctioned companies used corruption within the gold industry to fill government coffers and maintain political control.
- Officials including Santiago Hernan Bermudez Tapia, vice minister of energy and mines, were sanctioned as Empresa Nicaraguense de Minas funnels gold profits to private sector partners and regime insiders, Treasury alleged.
- Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the U.S. will not allow the "illicit confiscation of American-owned assets" and will "target revenue streams that empower the corrupt Murillo-Ortega regime.
