US rejects claim it sought to influence Malaysian politics

On Sept 5, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang alleged that an Embassy representative once asked him whom PAS would propose as prime minister if the party took over the Malaysian government.
Speaking at the 72nd PAS congress, Hadi said the meeting occurred during the Pakatan Rakyat coalition era, with Datuk Mustafa Ali attending to discuss political leadership.
When the ambassador asked "Who does PAS propose as prime minister?" Hadi retorted "Who does America agree with?" drawing praise from Tun Mahathir Mohamad.
On Sept 6, The Charge David Gamble denied the claims, stating America had never sought to determine Malaysia's political leadership.
Hadi further claimed PAS rejected offers from America to topple Barisan Nasional, though other PAS leaders attended Embassy events during President Barack Obama's visits to Malaysia.
