US Okays $686m F-16 Tech Sale to Pakistan

The $686 million upgrade includes Link-16, cryptographic gear, avionics, and training to extend Pakistan's F-16 service life to 2040 and enhance US interoperability.

  • On December 8, 2025, the U.S. Defence Security Cooperation Agency authorised the $686 million sale of advanced technology and support for Pakistan's F-16 fighter jets, notifying Congress.
  • DSCA said the sale supports US foreign policy by preserving interoperability with US and partner forces and modernising Block-52 and Mid Life Upgrade aircraft for safety.
  • The package includes Link-16 systems, cryptographic equipment, avionics updates, training and logistical support, valued at $37 million major defence equipment and $649 million other items.
  • The DSCA said the proposed sale `will not alter the basic military balance in the region`, and Pakistan's armed forces `has shown a commitment to maintaining its military forces` and can absorb the technology.
  • Reported on December 11, 2025, the notice states the DSCA letter concludes the sale will support US foreign policy and national security objectives while ensuring Pakistan can operate its F-16 fleet safely.
