UN experts gravely concerned for Britons on hunger strike in Iranian jail
U.N. experts said the couple faces grave risk after more than 30 days without food and urged Iran to reopen the case.
On Wednesday, United Nations rights experts warned that the detention of Lindsay Foreman and Craig Foreman in Iran may amount to "hostage-taking." The rapporteurs described the pair as "wrongfully detained" and urged their immediate release.
Tehran sentenced the couple to 10 years in Evin prison last year after charging them with espionage during a motorcycle trip. The British nationals deny these charges, which experts described as "highly questionable grounds."
Craig has been on a hunger strike for more than 30 days, while Lindsay has refused food for more than 20, prompting experts to declare "After 30 days without food, this is a medical emergency." The family reports unsanitary conditions with no mattresses.
The family has collected more than 88,000 signatures demanding action, criticizing the response from The British. Joe Bennett, their son, stated he felt a "profound sense of abandonment" due to lack of consular support.
