US sanctions network recruiting Colombian fighters for Sudanese paramilitary
The U.S. Treasury sanctioned four Colombians and their firms for recruiting 300+ former soldiers to train and fight with Sudan’s RSF amid ongoing genocide allegations.
- On Dec 9, the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned four individuals and four entities it accused of forming a transnational Colombian network recruiting fighters for Sudan's civil war.
- Treasury officials linked the recruitment to RSF abuses after the U.S. Department of State determined on January 7 that the RSF committed genocide and that fighting threatens U.S. interests in Africa.
- Recruiters used Bogota employment firms International Services Agency and a second firm, plus Panama-based Global Staffing/Talent Bridge, while payments processed millions of US dollars through Comercializadora San Bendito and Maine Global Corp.
- Sanctions freeze U.S. assets and bar U.S. persons from dealings with designees, while Treasury said the network worsens a 'worst ongoing humanitarian crisis' and urged external support to cease.
- The conflict's humanitarian toll and the influx of foreign fighters, including hundreds from Colombia since at least September 2024, underscore regional risks with more than 12.4 million displaced and over 3.3 million refugees.
