US has deported 25,000 people to third countries under secretive deals: Report
An international investigation found the Trump administration used secret agreements and $410 million to send migrants to countries where they had no ties.
- On Monday, an investigation revealed the United States has deported more than 25,000 people to 35 countries under secretive agreements with nations having no ties to the migrants, according to Forbidden Stories.
- The State Department's Office of Remigration, created in May 2025, manages these deals using visa bans to pressure countries into accepting deportees while earmarking $410 million to facilitate returns.
- Internal State Department records show $81 million was earmarked for signatory governments, while more than $178 million went to the International Organisation for Migration and $123 million to UNHCR.
- Lawyers told AFP that deportees are held without charge in countries where they have no ties or rights, describing the situation as a "legal black hole." Eswatini has received 32 people since July 2025.
- Beyond the majority sent to Mexico, the administration has finalized agreements in 27 countries across Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific, with Forbidden Stories reporting the administration approached 49 of Africa's 54 nations.

Since Trump took office, more than 25,000 migrants have been deported to countries without any connection to them. The "Office for Remigration" is responsible.
