U.S. extends work permissions for immigrants with TPS hours before expiration
The short extension gives employers and Haitian workers more time as litigation continues after the Supreme Court ruling.
On Friday, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services extended employment authorization for Haitian Temporary Protected Status holders through July 24, providing a two-week reprieve for hundreds of thousands of workers.
The extension follows the U.S. Supreme Court's June 25 decision, which cleared the way for the Trump administration to move forward with ending Temporary Protected Status for Haitian and Syrian immigrants while litigation continues.
Approximately 158,000 Haitians in Florida hold TPS, with about 113,000 working in health care; the Florida Health Care Association warns that losing these workers could strain services and create staffing shortages.
Employers have begun placing some Haitian workers on leave despite government guidance, creating widespread uncertainty. Viles Dorsainvil, executive director of the Haitian Immigrant Help and Support Center, said "folks are coming on a daily basis asking us questions because it is so uncertain."
Advocates are rallying behind Senate Bill 4814, which would extend Temporary Protected Status for Haitians through January 2029, offering a legislative path for long-term resolution as federal courts continue reviewing the administration's authority to end the program.
