US prepared for visa sanctions on China over migrants issue: Report
Washington is weighing higher visa bonds and more entry denials after China accepted about 3,000 deportees in early 2025, an official said.
The U.S. government threatened visa sanctions on China on May 5, citing Beijing's failure to repatriate undocumented citizens, a senior administration official told Reuters.
After accepting about 3,000 deportees via charter flights in early 2025, China scaled back cooperation over the past six months, resisting U.S. requests to repatriate tens of thousands of citizens.
Current U.S. estimates indicate more than 100,000 undocumented Chinese nationals reside in the country, with over 30,000 facing final removal orders and more than 1,500 currently detained awaiting deportation.
If China does not increase cooperation, the U.S. will consider increased cash bonds for visa applicants, deny additional visas, and block more entries at the border.
President Donald Trump plans to visit Beijing on May 14-15 and raise the deportation issue during meetings with President Xi Jinping, seeking trade concessions ahead of November's midterm elections.
