US deports more than 100 people to Haiti as gang violence persists
On Thursday, the United States deported 101 people to Haiti on a charter flight from Louisiana, landing in Cap-Haitien instead of the capital.
Deportees arrive in Cap-Haitien because gangs control an estimated 70% of Haiti's capital, rendering the main international airport in Port-au-Prince too dangerous for safe landings.
This flight marks the third consecutive Thursday deportation, shifting from monthly to weekly flights, said Human Rights First's ICE Flight Monitor, which tracks flight data.
Nicolas Mardochée, a coordinator with Haiti's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed 101 deportees were aboard, including Renan Hédouville, a former Office of Citizen Protection leader accused of corruption.
Following the termination of Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, which affected around 350,000 individuals, gang violence has displaced nearly 1.5 million people across Haiti.
