The U.S. Treasury sanctioned five individuals and one company for facilitating arms deals that fund North Korea's weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs linked to Myanmar's military regime.
- On Thursday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against five individuals and one entity involved in arms trafficking and funding Pyongyang's weapons programs.
- The network brokered weapons sales between Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation and Myanmar military regime, which since Feb. 1, 2021, has relied on aerial and artillery attacks causing civilian deaths and infrastructure damage.
- Royal Shune Lei Company Limited's leaders Tin Myo Aung and Kyaw Thu Myo Myint brokered deals and met KOMID representatives in China, while Kim Yong Ju coordinated sales of aerial bomb kits and monitoring gear.
- OFAC added two North Koreans, three Myanmarese nationals, and one Myanmarese company to the sanctions list, aiming to disrupt illicit networks and target DPRK weapons programs, the U.S. Department of the Treasury said.
- Amid expectations of resumed talks, the sanctions increase pressure on North Korea's weapons supply chain despite speculation about a potential meeting at APEC on Oct. 31.
