US approves $1 billion arms sale to UAE
- On Monday, Oct 5, the State Department approved a $1 billion sale to the United Arab Emirates of up to 10,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System guidance sections for rockets.
- The UAE and other US-allied Gulf countries have faced repeated attacks from Iranian forces using drones and missiles, prompting enhanced defensive capabilities.
- Converting unguided rockets into precision munitions, the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System allows forces to shoot down drones without deploying costly interceptor missiles.
- Separately, the State Department announced a $400 million sale to Kuwait for "repair and return services" for Patriot missiles, which have played a key role countering regional attacks.
- These sales "will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major defence partner," the State Department said.
