- On Wednesday, United States and Sri Lankan authorities seized 463 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine in Colombo, disrupting a Pakistan-based narcotics network attempting to smuggle drugs valued at $21 million to international black markets.
- The Drug Enforcement Administration and Sri Lanka Police Narcotics Bureau tracked suspicious maritime containers from Pakistan between Aug 14 and 29, enabling the joint team to intercept the shipment upon arrival in Colombo.
- Valued at $21 million, the narcotics were concealed in bath towels, and Police deputy inspector-general Ashoka Dharmasena reported two Pakistani men and one local suspect were arrested in the operation.
- Sri Lanka's ongoing anti-narcotics drive since October has resulted in the seizure of nearly 14 tonnes of illegal drugs, with Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala noting most originate in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
- The US Embassy stated the operation "underscores the strength of the US-Sri Lanka partnership in dismantling transnational criminal organisations that fund terrorism and threaten communities in both our countries.
