US accuses Rwanda of violating the peace deal as M23 rebels seize a key eastern Congo city
The U.S. accuses Rwanda of backing M23 rebels who seized Uvira, displacing 200,000 and killing over 400 civilians, risking regional conflict escalation.
- On Friday, the United States accused Rwanda of violating a U.S.-brokered peace agreement by backing a new offensive as M23 seized Uvira, South Kivu province, on Wednesday.
- Rwanda denies backing M23 but acknowledged last year it has troops and missile systems in eastern Congo, while M23 agreed earlier this year to a ceasefire in separate negotiations.
- More than 400 civilians have been killed and about 200,000 displaced, while the U.N. says M23 has around 6,500 fighters and Waltz told the Security Council Rwanda supports with roughly 5,000 to 7,000 troops.
